More than 300 schools allowed to increase tuition

" The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has approved a tuition increase of up to P50 per unit in over 300 schools in the country.

Of the 390 universities and colleges which petitioned for a tuition hike, CHED has allowed 337 private universities and two public schools to impose a tuition increase ranging from P30 to P50 per unit.

"Those 339 schools went through the consultation process. At least we can say that those schools followed the process," CHED executive director Julito Vitriolo said in a 24 Oras newscast.

wever, the commission refused to identify the schools which will be imposing a tuition hike, saying parents can call CHED regional offices to verify if their children's schools are among those allowed to increase their fees.

It likewise defended its decision to sanction the tuition increase, saying it depends on the needs of the universities and colleges.

"It depends on their needs. The salaries of their teachers are important, and 70 percent of the increase will go to the salaries of the teachers. They need to hike their tuition is there is already a clamor for that," Vitriolo explained.

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) said the tuition hike was unjust.

Based on their records, tuition increase this year may hit as much as P855 per unit, from P230.79 per unit in 2001.

The organization called for a revocation of the order that allowed schools to increase their tuition, saying some did not conduct proper consultation with students.  "

Two weeks ago, Willie Revillame took an indefinite leave on Wowowee. This after his threat on the May 4 episode of Wowowee that he will resign from Wowowee if the ABS-CBN management will not fire The Buzz segment host and DzMM radio host Jobert Sucaldito. Action superstar Robin Padilla temporarily replaced Willie Revillame on Wowowee. Here is the “resignation/release letter” of Willie revillame to the management of ABS-CBN:

Dear Sir Gabby and Ma’am Charo,

I have labored over the past week on what to do in the face of another setback in my relations with the management of the network. ABS-CBN has been my home for the last five years and five months and it has given me the greatest gift—the opportunity to reach out to people who have so little in life.

In the process, I have come to realize that my gratitude to the network would be more meaningful if I considered the impact of my recent actions which has placed the station in a bad light. This is among the reasons, as I will explain in this letter, that I humbly request the management, to release me as a talent of the network.

It is no secret that the program “Wowowee,” for almost five and a half years, has been the core of my existence. The program gives me a sense of purpose because I make people happy and I give them hope that, despite their difficulties, they can make things happen for themselves. Because of this, my world has revolved around the show. The desire to make it the best noontime show, has consumed my waking hours, as I conceptualize its format and contents from Monday to Saturday. Apart from this, I want the show to give the network excellent ratings to maintain its reputation as the leader in the broadcasting industry.

My devotion to the show is unparalleled that I have even been besieged by health problems due to the long hours I spend daily, thinking of how to bring “Wowowee” closer to the public. In fact, I have developed a heart blockage, which has already once posed a real threat to my life. I have sacrificed so much. Now, I have to accept the reality that I also have to take good care of my health.

Liberal Party chooses Sonny Belmonte

 

The Liberal Party (LP) has formally chosen outgoing Quezon City Mayor and Congressman-elect Feliciano Belmonte Jr. as its candidate for speaker of the House of Representatives.

The decision was made on Wednesday night during a caucus of more than 60 LP leaders at their party headquarters in Cubao, Quezon City.

LP standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, who has apparently won the presidency, and his running mate Sen. Mar Roxas, who is party president, presided over the caucus.
